Capital One Bowl: 3 keys for Nebraska

By Adam Rittenberg: Big Ten Blog

1. Establish tempo on offense: When Nebraska’s offense operates in high tempo, it’s extremely tough to stop. The key is finding that rhythm, and the Huskers will need to be effective with first- and second-down runs. Junior I-back Rex Burkhead needs to pick up positive yards to prevent obvious passing situations, when Gamecocks standout pass-rushers Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney can pin their ears back and go. South Carolina’s defense is outstanding against the pass, but the Huskers can attack the Gamecocks on the ground with Burkhead, quarterback Taylor Martinez and others. Nebraska’s offensive line has dealt with inexperience and injuries all season. This is the time for the unit to step up.

2. Alfonzo Dennard vs. Alshon Jeffery: The game’s best one-on-one matchup pits Nebraska’s top cornerback (Dennard) against South Carolina’s star wideout (Jeffery). Dennard has shut down standout receivers like Iowa’s Marvin McNutt, and he’ll need a strong effort against another NFL prospect in Jeffery, who holds South Carolina’s career receiving record. Opposing teams often shy away from throwing in Dennard’s direction, but South Carolina’s Connor Shaw will be looking for Jeffery on Monday. Which Nebraska defense shows up will go a long way toward determining the game’s outcome, and the Huskers will lean heavily on Dennard.

3. Win the turnover battle: South Carolina has struggled with giveaways in its bowl losses, while Nebraska committed eight turnovers in its three defeats and just nine others in its other nine contests. If the Huskers can hang onto the football and force a mistake or two from Shaw and the Gamecocks’ ball-carriers, they’ll be in good shape to pull off the victory. Nebraska senior linebacker Lavonte David has been the defense’s top playmaker, recording two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Look for David to set the tone and have a strong performance in his final game as a Husker.

Orlando, Fla. – The Nebraska football team conducted a two-hour practice in full pads on Wednesday morning, continuing preparations for the Capital One Bowl with its matchup with South Carolina less than a week away.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck, who earned his degree from Central Florida in Orlando, met with the media following practice and said he’s been encouraged by the team’s effort and focus.

“It went good,” Beck said of Wednesday’s practice. “Our guys are practicing really hard and our retention’s been good, our tempo’s been good. I’ve been pleased. Obviously, we have a couple more days to shore up some of the finer details of the game, but I like where we’re at right now.”

Beck also talked about the challenge of facing South Carolina’s stout defensive line, led by All-American defensive end Melvin Ingram. The Gamecocks rank fourth nationally in total defense and are second against the pass.

“They’re good,” Beck said. “They’re great pass rushers. They make plays. Those guys do a good job and when they’re not making plays, it’s because they’re eating up blocks and their linebackers and safeties are making plays. They’re well coached and they do a really good job within their scheme.”

Nebraska’s currently in the middle of its first practice on the grass fields at Freedom High School in Orlando, Fla.

The Huskers couldn’t ask for any better weather — party cloudy at around 70 degrees with a 15 mph breeze gusting around 25 mph every now and then.

It was a little different Tuesday seeing John Papuchis, the new defensive coordinator, lead the defense’s pre-practice walk-through, what used to be Carl Pelini’s responsibility.

But Papuchis handled himself just fine, speaking firmly and purposefully, as if he’d been doing this his entire coaching career. Coach Bo Pelini obviously trusts him. Pelini spent the entire walk-through on the other side of the field, talking with trainers, administrators and team managers.

The pre-practice routine for the offense wasn’t any different Tuesday. Like it has all year, the unit started with a two-minute drill (speakers on a motorized cart blaring music the entire time as a distraction).

The playlist? It started with some Notorious BIG, which had many of the defensive players bobbing, bouncing and gyrating. Then suddenly, the base dropped out and the beat slowed way, way down. A few Huskers verbally conveyed their displeasure with the new song. Right at the same time, on to the field trots linebackers coach Ross Els, coming from the locker room.

“Kenny Chesney?” Els said. “This is awesome!”

That Friday night when the team arrived in Wyoming, there was a chapel service, a normal procedure the night before a game for those who are interested.

(Running back coach Ron) Brown was there. So were many of his running backs, including starters Rex Burkhead and Tyler Legate.

“Our chapel service was on unselfishness and serving, and washing each other’s feet,” Brown said. “I asked the guys, ‘OK, guys, in our room, ‘Who’s been that guy?’ And they’d already seen Curenski get up early and come to the practice session and not get on the plane.

“I looked up and I saw Rex and I saw Tyler, and I saw tears streaming down their faces. And I couldn’t hold it in. Because we realized that’s the example we’re talking about.”

For those not familiar, here is what the feet washing refers to.

The 2011 regular season was a big one for Nebraska’s Rex Burkhead. On the field, his numbers were impressive – 1,268 yards and 15 touchdowns. Off the field, his dedication to the community was equally outstanding. Burkhead became known as the most beloved Husker since the late Brook Berringer.

Cornhusker fans already recognize how special the junior I-Back is. What will it take to get Burkhead recognized on the national stage in 2012? Better yet, what will it take for him to win the coveted Heisman Trophy?

I posed the question on Twitter and received many responses:

@CBeck_23: Start campaigning now

This isn’t a bad idea. While any campaigning won’t necessarily come from Burkhead himself, it is definitely an opportunity for fans to get the ball rolling. There are already many Twitter and Facebook accounts created that are dedicated to the movement, so it appears fans think it’s not too early. If the “Rex for Heisman” talk doesn’t grow louder in the off-season, expect it to come August of 2012.

There’s no news and we’re going to tell you there’s no news.

Many wondered if Bo Pelini might announce a new defensive coordinator after Friday’s practice.

It did not happen.

But Nebraska’s head football coach apparently knows what he wants to do to fill the opening created when Carl Pelini became Florida Atlantic’s head coach 12 days ago.

“To be honest with you, I have a pretty good idea,” Bo Pelini said in his first meeting with the media since his brother left. “I had a pretty good idea if we’d lose a coach, and I’ll just have to implement the plan when we’re ready to do it.

“I’ve been getting pulled a lot of different directions and doing a lot of different things and I’ll handle it in time, and I’ll announce it when the time’s right.”

As for hints about when the time might be right?

“Nope,” he said.

As that train sits in the station, many will no doubt continue to assume defensive line coach John Papuchis is a leading candidate for the job.

Certainly Papuchis has already shown great value to the program in his four years at Nebraska. The 33-year-old currently holds the titles of defensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and special-teams coordinator.

“He does it all,” offensive coordinator Tim Beck said when asked Wednesday about Papuchis. “He’s a tireless worker, a great motivator with the players. Hard-working, real sharp guy.”

If Papuchis were promoted to coordinator, it could allow Pelini to move one of his current grad assistants or interns to a full-time assistant’s role, something he’s shown a willingness to do.

Papuchis, Mike Ekeler and John Garrison are among those Pelini has made first-time, full-time assistant coaches at the FBS level.

Since the job came open, Pelini has indeed been busy hitting the recruiting trail, missing some of the early bowl practices so he could be in the living rooms of recruits.

Being momentarily down a full-time assistant shouldn’t affect Nebraska numberswise when it comes to recruiting. According to NCAA rules, a program can send only seven coaches on the road at a time anyway.

It’s believed Nebraska has commitments from eight players, which is about half as many as the Huskers will hope to sign in what will be a smaller recruiting class.

As the Feb. 1 national signing day looms, Pelini said he feels good about where this recruiting class is headed.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do yet,” Pelini said. “It’s part of the deal. I think it’s going well. Just got to keep pushing. It’s a fight to the end.”

On another topic, Pelini was not ready to say anything definitive when it came to the bowl game status of senior center Mike Caputo.

Caputo was cited on suspicion of DUI last Sunday, though he’s not yet been charged.

Pelini did suspend Rickey Thenarse and Baker Steinkuhler last bowl season for citations that were similar in nature, though the coach said Friday that every situation is different.

In Caputo’s case, one factor in his favor may be his clean record prior to the recent incident.

“I make the decision that first of all is in the best interest of our program, and that second of all is in the best interest of each kid,” Pelini said. “I handle each situation separately … and look at the facts and make the decision that’s right.

“And I think I’ve shown in the last four years that I’m fair. We run a disciplined program, a program that’s based on accountability. But to sit there and lump everything into one situation, you can’t do that. You look at every situation and go with that. I would think that people trust me to do that. I know the administration trusts me to do that and make the right decisions, and I guess that’s that.”

In the meantime, don’t expect to see Husker players on Twitter these days.

Pelini has placed a “temporary” ban on players tweeting.

His explanation as to why he made that decision was fittingly tidy, less than 140 characters.

“Why?” Pelini said. “Because I’m sick and tired of reading things that shouldn’t be out there on Twitter.”

As the Gamecocks seek to make program history in the Capital One Bowl, trying to get South Carolina’s first 11-win season, they face a squad with a renown football history. Nebraska’s rich football tradition began on Nov. 27, 1890, when Nebraska defeated a team representing the Omaha YMCA. The rest would literally be history, as the program would go on to boast five national championships.

They used to be called the Bugeaters?

Though it had a variety of nicknames, Nebraska went exclusively by the Bugeaters from 1892 to 1899. Bugeaters were insect eating bull bats that hovered over the plains. Nebraska enjoyed success in the first six seasons of that range, but had a disappointing season in 1899, prompting local sportswriter Charles S. Sherman to seize the opportunity to cease having to refer to Nebraska as the Bugeaters. At that time, Iowa had been called the Cornhuskers, but preferred the Hawkeyes, and so, Sherman began to refer to Nebraska as the Cornhuskers. The name would become the official nickname for the state.

Nebraska’s mascot, “Herbie Husker” was developed because of Nebraska’s trip to the 1974 Cotton Bowl. Artist Dirk West of Lubbock, Texas, designed a Cornhusker cartoon for the press headquarters that intrigued former Husker SID Don Bryant. Bryant and West collaborated to create the first “Herbie Husker” mascot.

Please watch this video that I dug up on Herbie Husker. It won’t disappoint.

What’s the deal with the Blackshirts?

A well-known tradition at Nebraska is nickname for the Huskers’ defensive unit, the Blackshirts. The name started in 1964 and is derived from the black, pullover jerseys worn by the defensive players in practice.

After a 56-0 victory against South Dakota, Nebraska coach Bob Devaney decided that his team would become a two-platoon football team, using offensive and defensive units. Teams were allowed to use the two-platoon system, which is now standard for collegiate squads, after changes in NCAA rules following the 1963 season. Delaney thought the change would be more efficient for his squad, and so black pullovers that would distinguish the defensive players from the offensive players were purchased.

The mystique of the Blackshirts started with how the pullovers were distributed at practice. When all members would practice with the defense, they would wear gray pullovers, but when the team was split into offensive and defensive members, the black pullovers were awarded to only the first-team defenders, motivating the lower units.

The black pullovers continually had to be earned, as they were collected after each practice and distributed anew the next practice. The tradition of the Blackshirts continued to grow with the unit’s success, as Nebraska boasted the No. 2 defense in 1964, No. 8 in 1965, and No. 1 in 1967.

A winning tradition

The Huskers won the National Championship in 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997. The 1994 team beat Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators in 1995.

“That’s the last and only time, and we got clobbered by Nebraska in the ‘95 game,” Spurrier said. “We went out there 12-0, which was the only undefeated regular season Florida had ever had, and because we lost the national championship game, nobody hardly talks about that ‘95 team at Florida. They’re just another team that won the conference championship, but that was really the best team of all that we had through the years down there, I think.”

No other football program has more than five national championships since 1970. Alabama and Miami also five in that time-span.

“When you think of Nebraska, you think of tradition,” said quarterback Connor Shaw. “They used to be a powerhouse and still are a very good ball team. I think it’s going to be exciting for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

“I think Nebraska is a good team and I’ve heard a lot about them,” said senior defensive lineman Travian Robertson. “They’ve got a great offensive line and I think it’s going to be a great game. We respect them and I’m pretty sure they respect us. I’m looking forward to preparing for them and watching film and I know our coaches are going to put us in the right position to get the victory and we’re just going to go out there and play.”

For South Carolina, a program that doesn’t have the same illustrious tradition of Nebraska, a win at the Capital One Bowl would be a step towards establishing that same tradition.

“We’re just trying to build a tradition here, so we feel like every week is a stepping stone for our program and it’s another opportunity to get better,” said defensive lineman Melvin Ingram. “Since we’ve been here, we went from losing our last six games our freshman year, to now, we’re 10-2 and going to the Capital One Bowl. The program has changed. We’re trying to turn it into a winning tradition, and so far, that’s what it’s going to be.”
