First NU practice under way in Orlando

Nebraska’s currently in the middle of its first practice on the grass fields at Freedom High School in Orlando, Fla.
The Huskers couldn’t ask for any better weather — party cloudy at around 70 degrees with a 15 mph breeze gusting around 25 mph every now and then.
It was a little different Tuesday seeing John Papuchis, the new defensive coordinator, lead the defense’s pre-practice walk-through, what used to be Carl Pelini’s responsibility.
But Papuchis handled himself just fine, speaking firmly and purposefully, as if he’d been doing this his entire coaching career. Coach Bo Pelini obviously trusts him. Pelini spent the entire walk-through on the other side of the field, talking with trainers, administrators and team managers.
The pre-practice routine for the offense wasn’t any different Tuesday. Like it has all year, the unit started with a two-minute drill (speakers on a motorized cart blaring music the entire time as a distraction).
The playlist? It started with some Notorious BIG, which had many of the defensive players bobbing, bouncing and gyrating. Then suddenly, the base dropped out and the beat slowed way, way down. A few Huskers verbally conveyed their displeasure with the new song. Right at the same time, on to the field trots linebackers coach Ross Els, coming from the locker room.
“Kenny Chesney?” Els said. “This is awesome!”
