Sipple: NU earns tough win, mixed reviews

Say this for the Nebraska football team:

It fits in well in its rugged conference — much of the time anyway.

It certainly did Friday.

Nebraska sent its beloved running back, Rex Burkhead, at Iowa a school-record 38 times (for 160 yards) in a 20-7 triumph that won’t go down as an instant classic, but possessed a certain charm for those who favor plain old physical football.

The Husker defense was in lockdown mode for the lion’s share of an overcast late morning/early afternoon game — perfect Big Ten weather.

In the aftermath, the Nebraska seniors hoisted one of those corny Big Ten rivalry trophies and carried it to their fearless leader.

Bo Pelini beamed with pride.

“That was a group of warriors today,” the Nebraska coach said. “We’re a beat-up football team.”
